Summary/Abstract: Paradoxically, an important information source for family history consists in the material data of its dissolution. Documents created either at the point of one partner’s death or at the moment of the couple’s breaking apart can bring a deeper insight on the norms, relations and atmosphere that typified the family life in the past. Without aiming to recreate the full contents of the Saxon family life in the 19th Century, the present study wishes to be a first step in the attempt of bringing into light the very rich archive data regarding the divorce in the Transylvanian Lutheran community. Its objective is to offer the reader a first glance, mostly quantity related, over the divorcing phenomenon in the Saxon society. The main issues of this study are: the attitude of the Church related to the dissolution of the marriage, the statistics of divorce reasons and the dynamics of the phenomenon over a time span.
