Translation – an Inspiration for Modern Slovak Poetry for Children

Summary/Abstract: The paper Translation – an Inspiration for Modern Slovak Poetry for Children is introduced with a reminiscence of Stanislav Šmatlák’s pioneering children poetry studies published together in the book The Poet and the Child (1963). His analysis of Nezval’s, Hrubín’s and Halas’s verse brought about the identification of the so-called reciprocal principle and the principle of play, both of which have become models of the communication between the adult writer and the young reader. Šmatlák closes up his book with reflections on Feldek’s and Válek’s children poetry. His interpretations have prompted me to analyze the translations of Hrubín (Feldek), Nezval (Feldek), and Tuwim (Válek). These translations can be seen as an important source of inspiration for modern Slovak children poetry.
