Summary/Abstract: Humans are cooperative species. Human cooperativity has biological and cultural roots as well. This article offers an explanation of the proximate sources of human cooperation, those coming from the sphere of social psychology of culture. The main proximate source I’m focusing on is the preference for strong reciprocity. In the article I show how it operates, and how it generates and sustains the system of social cooperation. After that, I discuss the economic and evolutionary foundations of this preference.
