Summary/Abstract: The implications of group diversity for group dynamics and performance were intensely debated in the groups and teams literature in the last decades. A series of reviews (Milliken si Martins, 1996; Williams si O'Reilly, 1998; Van Knippenberg, De Dreu si Homan, 2004; Harrison si Klein, in press; Van Knippenberg si Schippers, in press) show that social categorization processes associated with group heterogeneity have negative consequences on group dynamics and performance. These negative effects are reviewed in the present study and possible ways to address these effects are further discussed. The study uses the open perspective to discuss these negative effects on group processes (communication, planning, coordination and monitoring) as well as on emergent states (cohesion, commitment to the group). Diversity awareness training, whose main aim is to increase the voluntary control on the activation and use of stereotypes in group interactions, is presented as a main method to deal with these negative consequences.
