Summary/Abstract: Group composition is one of the most studied antecedents of group effectiveness and certainly one of the most debated topics in the literature on groups. It is an important topic because group composition is a central element of group design that can be easily changed in order to adjust performance. It is however also an intensely debated one because there is little agreement in the literature on whether the diversity is beneficial or not for group performance and effectiveness. The present paper reviews the implications of group diversity for group effectiveness using two systemic approaches (open systems and complex adaptive systems) and it also discusses the mechanisms through which diversity is related to group effectiveness. Finally the paper addresses the issue of multi-level designs in group diversity research and it presents the most common algorithms used to compute group diversity.
