The Translation Made by Methodius of Skitskij Paterik (St Methodius' Vicious Hyena)

Summary/Abstract: An apophthegm form the Scete Patericon, of which the translation must be attributed to St Methodius, serves as a starting-point to trace the location of 3 of the at least 10 Cyrillic transcriptions known to have been made of the Glagolitic original in the Balkans up to the 14th century. 7 transcriptions were positively made in the area of Ohrid; prior to 971, 5 Glagolitic copies were made at Preslav. The examination of the lexical innovations proper to each branch of the transmission, especially of the Hunno-Bulgarisms, yields no evidence as to the location of the transcriptions in question; it even yields no evidence for the presumed linguistic opposition between the areas of Preslav and Ohrid. Conclusive evidence to assign the 3 transcriptions in question to the area of Ohrid is provided by the codicologial and textological examination: they are directly descended from the original, whereas the 5 Preslav copies are descended from one Glagolitic copy (Ⰰ), made possibly as early as 887, before the original was transported to Ohrid, where it remained available for perusal until the end of the 14th c. Of the Preslav Glagolitic copies, Cyrillic transcriptions are attested only from East Slavic area, of the original, no Glagolitic copies are attested from Ohrid.
