Summary/Abstract: The study deals with the priorities of those Roman Catholic priests who made foundations between 1870–1915 in order to assist different fields of cultural activity or works of charity. The sources that are being investigated are to be found in the Archives of the Archidiocese of Alba Iulia (Gyulafehérvár) and witness that in the above mentioned period 29 foundations belonged to Catholic priests (21 for scholarships, 8 for other purposes). Analysing in detail each foundation we can conclude that they were primarily meant for the formation of a Catholic elite stratum able to defend Christian values against the ideas of liberalism.
