Summary/Abstract: Internet is a dynamic and interactive phenomenon that in a completely new and unprecendented way changed whatever used to be known not only of language and communication, but also of society and communities. Considering internet from the point of view of the emergence of a new generation of communication, that emergence has already happened and necessiates new approaches, new insights and new analyses. Such a novelty increasingly popular with all age groups is Facebook, a social network facilitating establishment of virtual communities, based on common various characteristics of its users. Beside the obvious and the most usual connections resulting from real acquaintances, the users could make contacts linking to various networks. Virtual communities are by no means new on the internet – they appeared with the very emergence of e-communication. Inhabitants of the same city or far away parts of the world could be members of the same virtual community. For not location, but common interest in a given topic or the same language connect them, the latter being the only way to declare their presence in the community. By making their e-profile the Facebook enables its users to establish a virtual network of friendships and acquaintances, and thus overcome the gap between the electronic and non-electronic world. Apart from the issues of virtual community, very important remains the question of identity and ways users present themselves to others. Due to the nature of social networks the users establish or join, personal information they present are probably more accurate than those presented in profiles for chatrooms or discussion groups, because the contacts on Facebook are mostly based upon real contacts in a non-electronic world. From communication point of view, the most interesting feature of Facebook is that it obviously facilitates integration of former internet communication forms (blogs, chatting, e-mails) with new interactive, multimedia and visual contents which used to be pertinent to web-pages.
