Virtual Communities as Linguistic Communities

Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses virtual communities on the internet, which are primarily created and realized as linguistic communities, since their members are connected only by communication and not by common space. This type of communities exists in three types of electronic communication: discussion groups, electronic chatrooms and MUDs. The paper gives a brief review of each of them with special reference to how a community comes to life and stays alive.
