On the Work of Methodius, First Teacher of the Slavs

Summary/Abstract: The article discusses problems linked with the translations made by SS Cyril and Methodius. Their joint work as translators provided the Slavonic rite clergy with the needed liturgical books: the Aprakos, the Apostolos (the Epistle Book), the Psalter, the Festal Menaion, the Triodion, the Octoechos, the Service Book, the Typicon. Methodius himself translated hundreds of pages (the Bible, the Nomokanon and the books of the Holy Fathers). He is also considered to be the author of original works (the Canon in Honour of St. Demetrius of Thessalonica, the Anonymous Homily). The Slavonic version of the Bible belongs to the oldest European versions of Sacred Scripture. The disciples of Methodius have taken part in the Slavonic translations attributed to him. But even in case this participation was not limited in scope, there still remains the undoubted service rendered by Methodius in preparing and implementing the enormous work of translation, in turning the language developed for liturgical purposes in to the basis of the world of letters of all Orthodox Slavs. What is important is not so much the share of the disciples of the Holy Brothers in the work of translation but the genius-like quality of that work and, looking at things across the years that have passed, what we owe to the many continuators of the Cyrillo-Methodian traditions.
