Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the use and historical development of two Proto-Slavic words: *ukruchъ and *pǫto. Both have been attested to in the classical Old Bulgarian monuments (Gospel versions and the Codex Suprasliensis) and in works by Old Bulgarian authors preserved in later copies. The words can be seen also in later written monuments as well as in some folklore works. The author traces the gradual replacement of these words respectively by комат, къшей, парче and вериги, окови, клапи in the Old Printed Bible, the Synodal version of Sacred Scripture and Modern Bulgarian.
