Summary/Abstract: Pilgrimages to the sacred sites in the North Caucasus have become very popular since the fall of the USSR. In some places the renovation of tombs of Sufi sheiks was financed and controlled by the state. Impressive buildings were erected, dirt roads were turned into asphalt roads.
