Summary/Abstract: The article considers some materials published in periodicals during the period of National Revival, representing attempts to create a general ethno-psychological characteristics of the Bulgarians. Among the principle mental features of the Bulgarian almost invariably are pointed out his diligence, hospitality, love of peace. The negativism determined by the increased requirements of contemporaneity and up-to-date through the values and standards of European civilization, is manifested even in some assessments of the mutually considered as positive virtues patience and thriftiness. Alga in a critical aspect are the arguments of the contemporaries about the traditional conservatism of the Bulgarian; the replacing of the accent in the attitude towards the binary opposition "ours" -"strangers"; the indifference to public affairs; determined by equality habits and spirits reactions to the changes in the social and economical structure of the society. Despite the broad spectrum of possibilities of a contradictory interpretation of the sources, it is indisputable that the figures in Bulgarian Revival periodical press are jointed in their efforts to contribute for the developing of new mental virtues, to stimulate the ambition for a social recognition and acknowledgement of person through his manifestation in public affairs.
