Summary/Abstract: The age rating system is one of the ways of protecting under-age viewers from content that is inappropriate for their age, but it also very often translates into attendance results of films. The author draws attention to the latter aspect, and thus tries to answer the question whether the age classification influenced the turnout results in cinemas in the last decade of the Polish People’s Republic. In the first part of the article, he describes methodological problems related to the study of attendance and age categories, and then indicates the most important relationships between age categories and the number of cinema viewers. These comments are supplemented with a qualitative analysis based on various para-texts (e.g. advertising announcements, posters, letters to magazine editors and complaints to institutions dealing with dissemination) relating to films such as: "Enter the Dragon", (dir. Robert Clouse, 1973), "Czułe miejsca", ("Tender Spots", dir. Piotr Andrejew, 1980), "Die Ehe der Maria Braun" ("The Marriage of Maria Braun", dir. Rainer Werner Fassbinder, 1979), "Alabama" (dir. Ryszard Rydzewski, 1984), "Karate po polsku" ("Karate Polish style", dir. Wojciech Wójcik, 1983), "Magiczne ognie" ("Magic Flames", dir. Janusz Kidawa, 1983), or "37°2 le matin" ("Betty Blue", dir. JeanJacques Beineix, 1986).
