Summary/Abstract: Poland’s policy towards the Western Balkans not only influences its interests in the region in the narrow sense but, more importantly, determines its position in the European Union. As a large EU member, Poland has to pay much more attention to the Balkans than it has done so far. The region is important from the point of view of European security, the formulation of a joint foreign policy and the preservation of the Union’s readiness to admit new members. We should pay more attention to the Western Balkans at regional cooperation fora. This is indeed indispensable if we want our cooperation with other Central European countries to further effectively our interests in the EU. Therefore, some emphasis should be placed on Balkan matters in the program of Poland’s presidency of the Visegrad Group (V4), commencing in July 2008.
