Summary/Abstract: The Cross in undoubtedly one of the most important symbols in Christianity, so its cult has been in existence since the beginning of the Catholic Religion. The popularity of the Adoration of the Holy Cross can be seen in the scholarly literature in the modern era, especially after the Council of Trent. Many authors considered topics connected with the Holy Cross as quite an essential and elemental image in a sacral space. Johannes Molanus, Jakob Gretser, Francis de Sales, Giacomo Bosio and also Polish authors, Stanislaus Hosius and Paul Ruszel, attached special importance to crosses and crucifixes. They insisted that the likeness of the crucified Saviour had had a long tradition in Christianity. The great accentuation on the Cross and crucifix is connected with their special place in a church’s interior, in the middle of every church, in medio Ecclesiae. It can be concluded that the subject of the cult of the Holy Cross after the Council of Trent in the modern literature had a great impact on the theory of art.
