Economic Aspects of the Functioning of Family Companies Operating in Poland in Comparison with European Countries

Summary/Abstract: Family companies comprise a considerable part of the sector of small and medium-sized enterprises. It signifies that they play a significant role in Polish economy. For that reason, it is of a great importance to keep stable both economic and financial situation of these subjects. The following article covers intricacies connected with the theory of family companies, presented both in Polish and foreign literature on this subject. Furthermore, the paper shows research findings, depicting economic aspects of the workings of family companies in Poland in comparison with chosen European countries. The analyses were carried out by the association Family Enterprise Initiative as well as KPMG company, offering audit and advisory services and published in the report entitled ‘Family Business Barometer’. The research covers the years 2014-2015, as since 2014 Polish family companies have been taking part in it as well. In the first edition it gathered 710 responses, of which 132 came from Poland, and in the next 878 surveys and 144 from the home country.
