Summary/Abstract: The current period of deep economic and financial crisis of the Euro-zone entails a comprehensive and wide-ranging crisis of legitimacy of the European Union, which, to a large extent, affects not only its activities towards Member States, but in particular its role as a responsible and relevant international actor. In the forthcoming period, it will be particularly crucial for the European Union to make a decision on its future existence and functioning. In this paper, we will therefore focus our attention to the current crisis of the European Union legitimacy, as well as to actually discuss ways of its future direction, outlining briefly advantages and disadvantages of each mode and drawing a picture of the complexity and the extent of impacts of each variation.
