Summary/Abstract: During the last decade the issue of metaphor research methodology has been heatedly debated. The paper suggests several reasons for the debate and sets out to overview several approaches towards the issue. Despite the usage-based approach widely advocated by cognitive linguists, the authors of the Theory of Conceptual Metaphor adhere to an exclusively introspective point of view, not supported by any quantitative parameters of investigation. The American School has eventually started to implement the methodology of psycholinguistic experiment, where the focus is on the processes of reasoning and memory, whereas language is mainly used for priming. The European School of research has traditionally adhered to the “textual” approach relying on the combinability of words.
