Unpublished Paraenetic Work in the Form of an Alphabet Acrostic

Summary/Abstract: The paper includes textological and linguistic analysis of an unpublished Slavonic work in alphabetic acrostic, entitled Пѹчениѥ по алфавитѹ. The text is composed of 24 maxims or short instructions on rules of Christian life, each begins with definite lexeme allude to a vice or a virtue – with respective letter of Greek alphabet marked at the margins. This anonymous work is based on Byzantine sources with archetypes in the wisdom Christian literature: Evagrius Ponticus, Palladius, Nilus of Sinai, Gregory the Theologian, Maximus the Confessor, etc. The ascetic content of the text, its brevity and simplicity suggest a training function of the Slavonic translation. There are 3 copies of the texts in Slavonic manuscripts (MSS 382 from Hillandar monastery, Mount Athos, 72 and 310 in Library of Romanian Academy of Sciences) and 3 unpublished copies in the Byzantine manuscripts (Gr. 38 from Vatopedi monastery, Mount Athos, Gr. 126 from Russian State Library in Moscow and Theol. gr. 167 from the Austrian National Library). The aim of the research work is to compare Slavonic tradition with Byzantine one and to formulate specific features of translation's technique. The conclusion of the preliminary investigation of the text is that the Slavonic translation of the text was made in Bulgaria and could be dated the second half of 10th c. In appendix the parallel texts from Slavonic and Greek tradition have been displayed.
