Summary/Abstract: The aim of the study was to analyze the opinions and attitudes of Italian medical students about the doctor's role in quitting smoking, self-assessment of practical skills in tobacco counseling and analysis of students' opinions and attitudes regarding the ban on smoking in public places. The Global Health Professions Student Survey (GHPSS) in Italy was conducted among 730 medical students in 2010. 20% of Italian medical students declared smoking, and 75.5% of students were exposed to passive tobacco smoke in public places, and 28.3% were exposed athome. The majority (65.1%) of the respondents stated that the physician plays an important role in creating pro-health attitudes among patients. Almost all (94.3%) students thought that the doctor plays an important role in giving advice on quitting smoking. More than half (56.6%)of respondents agreed with the statement that a doctor smoking cigarettes gives his patientsless advice on quitting smoking. As many as 79.1% of respondents believe that patients havea better chance of quitting smoking when they receive advice from a doctor. Only 10.5% of Italian medical students admitted that during the course of their studies they had receivedtraining on techniques that help to quit smoking. Medical students who represent future doctors should acquire knowledge about diseases related to smoking and acquire specific skills necessary to teach smoking techniques.
