Summary/Abstract: Local currencies are a matter of interest to the social economy and alternative economy. A theory of so-called free currency (Freigeld in German) and a monetary system Freigeld was created by Silvio Gesell, a German merchant and entrepreneur in the 1990s. One of the first examples of local money in the world were revenue stamps WÄRA used in the years 1930-1931 in the community of Schwanenkirchen and payment receipts in the Austrian industrial city Wörgl in 1932. Local currency used in different provinces of Poland are: Dobry (since 2014), Piast (since 2014) and Zielony (since 2015).Local currencies operate within a closed system and support local companies, stimulate internal cooperation and alleviate the effects of the financial crisis. The challenges to the functioning of the local currencies are among others: local coverage, the inability to transfer and the opposition of representatives of the banking sector.
