Summary/Abstract: Back in time shelters were supposed to provide the hikers with a roof above their heads. With time, thanks to permanent hosts, they began to provide tourists with food, information and emergency services. In this study the author will try to show that over time they have become tourist attractions themselves. It is easy to observe by comparing the intensity of tourist traffic in the Tatras, in the areas similar to the natural attractiveness with or without the shelter. However, forcing the attractiveness and thus tourist traffic through the expansion of shelters services causes environmental degradation. It is confirmed by the Tatra experience. In the study, the author will try to identify factors thatare particularly important for regions where tourism infrastructure is just being created (eg Andes, Patagonia), which can mitigate the conflict between the expansion of the accommodation base and sustainable development.
