Summary/Abstract: The aim of the presented article is to indicate conditions affecting the measurement of tourist investments in theoretical and practical terms. Particular emphasis was placed on the problem of their identification and measurement in metropolitan cities. The subject of consideration is material investments (tangible, intangible and legalassets from a property rights perspective) of developmental or modernization character. The authors reviewed various approaches to their definition, indicated the information needs related to the measurement of the size and structure of these inputs. The second part of the study presents an attempt of such a measurement for the city of Warsaw. The presented considerations lead to conclusion that estimating the value of tourist investments in a given area is a very difficult task. The key issue is to answer the question which investments should be counted as touristic. An undoubted barrier is the scarcity of collected information and the scope of their publication by public statistics institutions. Therefore, it is advisable to take measures that would allow to obtain data useful for assessing the real contribution of tourism to the economy and the efficiency of public investments in this field.
