Summary/Abstract: The aim of the paper is to find out factors that affect purchasing behaviour of residents of particular countries and have impact on the scale and nature of crisis situations in the Polish tourist trade. The paper focuses on the characteristics of the competitive position of Poland as tourism destination for residents of Italy, France and Spain as compared to the position of two other central European countries: the Czech Republic and Hungary. The analysis covers the changes in nights spent in accommodation, in image of tourism attractiveness and relative prices of accommodation and restaurant services in the period between 2004 and 2010, i.e. from the accession to the EU of those countries. The research describes developments linked to the financial crisis in 2008 and natural disasters in 2010.
