Summary/Abstract: Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) can cause serious health problems. ETS is particularly dangerous for pregnant women because of potential adverse reproductive effects. The aim of the study was to assess the exposure to ETS of pregnant women. The questionnaire study was conducted at the Provincial Specialist Hospital in Lodz. The study covers data from 252 pregnant women. 22% (n=55) of studied subjects were exposed to ETS at the place of their residence. The survey showed that ETS exposure in the workplace affected 15% (n = 33) of pregnant women.More than half (53%) of women reported that they were exposed to ETS in public places. Because of the high prevalence of exposure to ETS among pregnant women there are necessary comprehensive actions, in order to curbcurrent situation. An important role should be played by medical staff, who take care for pregnant, who educate the patient. Counseling should include pregnant woman and their relatives. Running national antitobacco campaigns is also needed. In addition to creating a modern health policy people should also pay attention to the better enforcement of existing laws banning smoking in public places
