The Beginning of Transformation in Poland in the Polish Edition of L’Osservatore Romano

Summary/Abstract: Social processes initiated in Eastern Europe in 1989 – including Poland, the birthplace of John Paul II – were reflected in the Polish edition of L’Osservatore Romano. The Vatican journal contains speeches, reports from meetings, and commentaries on events in the Pope’s homeland from the perspective of the Holy See. The fundamental message of the Papal statements was the strengthening of hope, which was the driving force behind these transformations. The possibility that citizens could have real influence on the economy and politics increases the level of responsibility for the state, concentrated on realization of the common good. The Church makes the human being the object of particular care in a natural and eternal perspective, as its criterion of action is to preserve the principle of personalism. The events presented in this article have been grouped into three categories: statements addressed by Pope John Paul II to his compatriots, meetings with politicians and the resumption of diplomatic relations with the Holy See. As a result of the political transformation, Poland became an equal partner in global changes.
