Summary/Abstract: Small and medium enterprises constitute one of the main elements of regional infrastructure, determining the competitiveness and the future development of the region. Progress of the less developed regions cannot occur without active participation of SMEs. The higher the level of socio-economic development of the region, the better its competitiveness, and thus the conditions for the emergence of new and the development of the existing small and medium-sized enterprises. The paper aims at analysing and assessing the influence that the environment has on the development of SMEs located in developed and marginalised areas. In order to meet this objective, the following actions are required: (i) identifying the key components of the environment affecting the development of SMEs, (ii) delimiting the areas according to their level of socio-economic development, (iii) analysing development priorities of the enterprises studied, (iv) investigating the impact of the environment’s components on the development of SMEs in developed and marginalised areas, (v) comparing the conditions in which SMEs operate in the analysed areas.
