Summary/Abstract: Small and medium enterprises are one of the main elements of regional infrastructure which determines competitiveness and future development of the region. Progress of less developed regions cannot take place without active participation of small and medium enterprises. The aim of the paper is the analysis of stimulants and barriers to the development of small and medium enterprises in Poland which takes into account the unique nature of marginalised regions. The first part of the paper presents the characteristics of the regional determinants of the development of small and medium enterprises. The second part contains the analysis of determinants of the growth of SMEs based in marginalized regions which refers to the review of the author’s own quantitative research.
