Summary/Abstract: This paper tries to present findings from two case studies of family businesses and the impact they had in their immediate social contexts. Both companies are located in a highly specialized community [see Maza et al 2011; García 2011] which are characterized by a combination of rural and urban aspects, with economic activity based on small productive units highly specialized in workforce and characterized by particular social and cultural contexts which play an important role in the dynamics and industrial development of such units [Chávez 2013]. The paper consists of three main sections: the history of family business, their impact on the community and the changes they underwent both internally and externally in the generational change. It pretends to discuss two main points in particular: the role of the family business in economics and strategies for development and succession of family businesses.
