Summary/Abstract: The paper is focused on genre determinants of fable’s modern literary rendition. The author points at shifts of meaning in the contemporary Czech literary production and tries to find the essence of educational function of such texts. The selected books Slepice a televize (The Chicken and TV), Bajky moudré sovy (Wise Owl’s Fables) and Straka v říši entropie (The Magpie in the Empire of Entropy) by Czech authors Jiří Dvořák, Tomáš Špidlík and Markéta Baňková were published between 2003 and 2010. The author deliberately chose the books with varying approaches to fable’s traditional determining features and with varied messages and edifications. Moreover, the books deal with interpersonal relationships, philosophical questions and physical principles. The books are primarily intended for the young reader, yet their messages extend also to the adult reader. The paper analyses the approach of each author individually and then attempts to unify and define current trends in the postmodern treatment of fables.
