The concept of "national identity" in music and musicology

Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the article is to determine the place and role of musical art in the process of constructing Ukrainian national identity in an era of romantic social change. The methodology of the study is to apply a comprehensive system approach that led to the use of such research methods: historical-genetic, identifying the origin of phenomena; comparative-historical, which allows us to trace the concept of "national identity" in musical art through analogy with other humanitarian disciplines - historical science, philosophy, culturology, and political science. The scientific novelty of the work consists in introducing the category of "national identity" into the comprehension of the musical-historical process of development of Ukrainian music. Conclusions. The article examines the relationship between national identity and musical culture, which is nationally specific. It is argued that music in certain periods of its historical development played an important role in the design of Ukrainian national identity.
