Summary/Abstract: The article offers an insight into the history of the Department of GermanLanguage and Literature and the German line of study within Babeș-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca. The author looks back on the beginnings of the Department of German Language and Literature, on the most important stages in its development and the personalities, scientists and researchers who have left their mark on it. With the foundation of the German line of study new opportunities have opened for the study of German language, cultureand literature and thus for a fruitful collaboration with German and Austrian universities.
