Summary/Abstract: The article touches upon the issue of Social Welfare Centre as an institution supporting family. Social welfare offers assistance in the form of social work and financial means such as designated benefit, periodic benefit, permanent benefit and the possibility of providing children with additional food in school. The Act on social welfare of 12 March 2004 lists social phenomena and problems that have influence on the marginalization of society. The functioning of the Centre and problems faced by social workers in their everyday work show its hardship and the scale of social needs. The position for family assistant, whose task and duty is to provide support to the family by having direct contact with it, has been created at Social Welfare Centre’s. The assistant offers assistance to a particular number of families, which enables him to work in a detailed and systematic manner with its members. The essence of the assistance provided by volunteers, which is characterized by voluntariness and involvement, has been analysed. Social Welfare Centre’s also cooperate with volunteers who are assigned to particular families providing them with support and assistance in coping with everyday matters.
