Summary/Abstract: Senegal, like other African French-speaking countries, is facing a situation of coexistence and contact of languages. Such a situation requires a kind of multilingualism management, throughout a language policy and planning. Within that framework, the Senegalese State has solved its language issues. Thus, this article falls within the general and theoretical framework of language contact, and within the specific scope of language planning. Its goal is to analyse the situation of language planning in Senegal, and to suggest an alternative way as a solution to better take into account citizens’ political initiatives concerning languages. Because language planning is no consensus on that, and it is not above controversies and identity claims which must always be taken into consideration, for prospective language policy decisions.
