Summary/Abstract: The article compares and contrasts the development of reading skills in 10 – 11-year old children in Slovakia and in the United Kingdom. It does so by analysing the learning objectives, national assessment tests and teaching materials for this age from the point of view of genres and cognitive skills involved. A strength of the Slovak approach is in a variety of genres in focus. However, higher cognitive skills need to be attended to morefully. Recommendations are given regarding strategies of implementing the developmentof higher cognitive skills in children, such as drawing inferences, recognising facts from opinions, evaluating the use of language in text, and inferring the meaning of words from context.
