Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to introduce a cognitive approach towards vocabulary and highlight its potential for developing text competencies in children. In contrast to the structural concept, which accentuates the denotative aspects of a lexical meaning, the cognitive approach accentuates connotative aspects. These are essential in both understanding and production of a text. Cognitive aspects of lexical meaning are used in common communication. In artistic or journalistic texts, they serve as the basis for various cliché and phraseology. Shown on concrete examples of texts, identification by means of connotations that evoke certain words in children enables us to reveal children’s picture of the world, their attitudes and values. These findings can be consequently applied to the field of text comprehension.
