Summary/Abstract: The idea of countering the phenomenon of excessively high mortality rates among abandoned children was first introduced in Middle Ages. To meet this goal the institution of so-called institution of a reel was created. Today we have „windows of life” which should be localised in the premises of family and child-support organisations. They are institutional in character; currently a few dozen exist in Poland operating on the basis of similar provisions. Their seven-year existence in Polish culture have proven effective and needed. The paper discusses the benefits and drawbacks of „windows of life”. The first part includes protecting the child’s life and protecting the mother who might suffer from post-abortion syndrome. The negative aspects include preventing the children from meeting their biological parents (thus breaking the law), difficulty in reaching mothers in need and legal uncertainties.
