Summary/Abstract: Comparative interpretation of a new type of literary protagonist in a Serbian novel of the early XX century, embedded inthe framework of a European literary model, reveals many common traits and characteristics as a feature of the social context of the time in the Balkans. Decadence was more than just a conceptual movement – it was a kind of state of mind. In the age of decline, clear boundaries between good and evil disappear; meaning transforms into the absurd, and characters without dominant virtues become representative of the epoch.
