Summary/Abstract: While analysing Vojislav Ilic’s poem “The Marble Killer”, we tried to process the motif of statue that comes to life and kills its creator or fascinated observer, in the context of the world’s literary traditions that also had this topic at the centre. Ilić’s use of artificial themes, especially statue motifs, suggests a link with antiquity on one side and romanticism on the other. It also testifies to a connection with Parnassian poetry. There is another two-way relation: the statue is ambivalently understood and displayed in a variety of literary works. They are mostly based on the presentation of the statue as a creation of the artist’s, ideal and his object of fascination, but also a source of deadly, superhuman powers that redirect the fate of the lyrical hero. It enchants and kills, brings revenge and inspiration, connects beauty and fear. Hеr appearance usually depends on the specific psychological state of the viewer or the creator of the statue.
