Summary/Abstract: Gregory Nazianzen, a 4th-century Church Father, is the author of forty-five well composed orations. One of them is dedicated to the memory of the martyrdom of the priest Eleazar, seven brothers and their mother. They lived in times of The Maccabean Revolt (2nd century BC) and information about them exists in The Second Book of the Maccabees and The Fourth Book of the Maccabees. Although their martyrdom had taken place before Christ, Christians accepted them as witnesses of the faith and venerated them. Gregory’s Oration in Commendation of the Maccabees was very popular in Byzantium and it used to be rewritten in numerous copies. Nonetheless, the oldest Slavonic translations of the Gregory’s Orations do not include this text. On the other hand, in the Serbian medieval written tradition there exist manuscripts which contain Gregory’s Oration in Commendation of the Maccabees. One of them is the manuscript from the Dečani monastery No. 92 from 1351. In the manuscript from the Orahovica monastery (The Museum of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Radoslav Grujić’s Collection, call number З I 59, pp. 150a‒152a), one can find a Serbian Slavonic version of this text from the beginning of the 17th century. The scribe was Gavrilo Trojičanin. Although he does not mention anything about the rewriting process, the comparison of his text with the Greek original and an older Serbian Slavonic translation shows that the scribe had very a flexible approach to the original text. He changed some details in it, he edited out the considerable part of it, and he added information from some other sources. It is certain that Gavrilo Trojičanin was acquainted with The Synaxarion of Constantinople. At the end of the paper, there is an edition of the Serbian Slavonic text.
