Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the article is to reveal the specifics of the process of formation and formation of classical pantomime as an independent type of theatrical art from the time of antiquity. The methodology of the research is based on the principles of objectivity, historicism, multifactority, systemicity, complexity, development and pluralism, and to achieve the goal, the methods of scientific knowledge are used: problem-chronological, concrete historical, statistical, descriptive, logical-analytical. Scientific novelty. Cultural research of the formation and formation of pantomime as an independent type of theatrical art during the antiquity based on the analysis of rare sources was carried out; the terminological concept of "pantomime" is clarified and supplemented; The genesis of pantomime as the main type of plastic art of the ancient theater and the specifics of its expressive means, as well as the influence on the development of stage arts, are considered. Conclusion. Pantomime, as an independent form of stage art, the source of which is ritual activities, was formed as a result of the artistic development of theatrical practice in the context of the specifics of the socio-cultural space of the ancient society. As the rare sources of the I–V centuries testify A.D, the pantomime performances of the Roman Empire – a tragedy without words in which the performers, for musical accompaniment or singing, interpreting the mythological text, depicting characters, things and feelings. The theory of the origin of the characters of the Italian folk comedy of masks and modern pantomime from the characters of the pantomime arts of the third century is substantiated ІІІ cent. А.C. –V cent. A.D.
