Summary/Abstract: During the defensive war in September 1939 Uniejów and its region were the site of fierce combat between the troops of Polish army „Poznań” and German 8th army. The tactical importance of Uniejów was connected with a bridge crossing through the river, which was of key significance for Polish armed forces marching from the state border towards Warsaw. The first phase of fights took place on 7–8 September, when Polish troops prevented the 8th army from capturing and destroying the bridge, thus ensuring a safe crossing for Polish army. Fighting continued on 10th September. The cavalry troops belonging to army „Poznań”, covering the Polish offensive which was just being launched (the Bzura River battle), managed to stop Wermacht forces hastening with relief towards Łęczyca. Intensive fights brought heavy casualties among the population, both residents of Uniejów and the nearby villages, and refugees from the western part of Poland. German soldiers committed a number of war crimes. The author has identified Wermacht troops responsible for these crimes.
