Summary/Abstract: Research is a part of the evaluation of the measuring instrument titled items for assessing speech, hearing and visual readiness for reading and writing, authors: Ivančić, Đ.; Ljiljak; D. (2001). The instrument was the result of the efforts to improve the programming of the work in the preparatory phase of the special program for education of students, especially in motivating those perception, motoric and speech capabilities, important for initial reading and writing. The instrument has three components covering the area of speech readiness, hearing readiness and the area of visual readiness. The respondent sample in this research consists of 58 persons of both sexes, with light mental retardation, about to complete the first grade of elementary education according to special educational programs, 7.5 to 11 years of age, attending 14 schools in the following cities: Zagreb, Velika Gorica, Samobor, Šenkovec, Sisak, Karlovac, Varaždin, Čakovec, Bjelovar, Virovitica, Križevci and Koprivnica. The research was conducted individually, and the time for resolving the problems was not limited. Individual areas (speech, visual and hearing readiness) were investigated separately. The results show good metric characteristics of instruments per the above stated area.
