Summary/Abstract: The role of grandparents is changing with demographic, economic and sociocultural transitions. The common phenomenon in contemporary families is limitation of participation of parents in caring and education of children, which causes the need for inclusion of grandparents in care and educational activities. Seniors, who often had little time to raise their own children, now have time for grandchildren and compensate for the parental roles. The influence of grandparents on development of personalities and socialization of grandchildren is critical, while parents and adult grandchildren emphasize the strong emotional ties in intergenerational relations. Contemporary grandparents are healthier, more efficient and better educated than they used to be and have much to offer to their grandchildren. Furthermore, they cease to be only carers and accompany young people in the process of familiarizing with the world. The role of grandparents is not the only form of engagement of seniors as they attempt to maintain balance between care for themselves and young generations, participate in social and cultural life, often involving grandparents in their own activities.
