Summary/Abstract: Many families both in Poland and abroad face the problem of alcoholism. Parental and marital functions in these families are distorted, and the process of socialisation of children is also disturbed. Living under one roof with a person abusing alcohol evokes fear, anxiety and the feeling of mental discomfort in the family members. The influence of alcoholism of the parents on their children proved to be so strong that a special term – Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACoAs) – was coined to describe persons brought up in families with alcohol problems. The aim of this paper is to present selected aspects of the functioning of Adult Children of Alcoholics as well as to broaden the social awareness of the effects of alcoholism of at least one family member on the remaining members of the household.
