Summary/Abstract: With the financial support from the Orthodox Church through the various funds and foundations under its administration, the youth from Transylvania, Banat and Crişana could attend the courses of the Faculty of Theology from the University of Chernivtsi, the only institution with this profile from Austria-Hungary. Thus, they got to know an important urban centre of Eastern Austria which first of all offered them the opportunity to achieve professional and academic mastery, but it also meant leading an attractive and useful student life. Although, the University of Chernivtsi was founded by the Austrian state and not by the Romanian state, it had a decisive contribution to the formation of the Orthodox elite from Hungary and beyond, being, in our opinion, an identity-defining institution for the intellectuality of the Eastern confession from the territory enclosed within the arc of the Carpathian Mountains. The Faculty of Theology from Chernivtsi was under the spiritual patronage of the Metropolitans of Bukovina and Dalmatia and had a highly professional teaching staff. The Romanian students integrated perfectly into the social environment of the capital of Bukovina. They became members of the student associations, which had an obvious national and confessional character in Chernivtsi. Thus, they were members of the Junimea and Academia Ortodoxă societies, the most important Romanian student associations from Chernivtsi. The Romanian students contributed essentially to both scientific and social manifestations organised by these associations, some of the students even becoming leaders of the two Romanian student associations. Junimea Academic Society was an association for Romanian students in the Austro-Hungarian city of Czernowitz, located in Bukovina. Affiliated to Czernowitz University, Junimea was established on December 7, 1878. It carried forth the patriotic ideals proclaimed by Arboroasa, which the authorities had suppressed. The initial leadership included Dimitrie Onciul as president and Ciprian Porumbescu as secretary. Members habitually wore a ribbon patterned after the Romanian tricolour. They raised the flag on festive occasions, as well as an insignia inscribed Vivat, crescat, floreat Junimea. The theologian Romanian students contributed essentially to both scientific and social manifestations organised by this association, some of the students even becoming leaders of Junimea.
