Summary/Abstract: The goal of the study is to draw attention to the possibility of combining two directions in contemporary sociology and social anthropology, with regard to the notion of identity. The combined approach can be used in research on the linguistic worldview and the axiological vocabulary of a language. The two directions are: (1) the notion of identity being viewed as something multiaspectual, situational, relational, gradual, performative etc.; the knowledge of class differentiation being viewed as undermining the national unity of values; and (2) the notion of national identity being entrenched through the processes of (a) a state-controlled education and preservation of the nation’s historical memory, (b) social movements, and (c) popular culture. These seemingly contradictory threads can be used in ethnoliguistics as the dimensions of differentiation and convergence of value systems in the emergence of national identity.
