Summary/Abstract: The Modern Greek language represents a folk speech ({dimotikí}, ‘Demotic’ Greek), containing numerous lexical elements borrowed from an artificial written language ({katharévousa}, the so-called ‘purifying’ language), which was created in the 19th century by some Greek purists and used in Greece as an official language till 1976. Forty years after the introduction of “Demotic Greek” as the basic language of literature, science, law, national administration, as well as the Hellenic army, we can observe an immense influence of katharevousa into Modern Greek’s vocabulary. The article demonstrates this phenomenon on the basis of appellative names of craft shops.
