The Position of the Word {się}. Standard Recommendations vs Systemic Determinants

Summary/Abstract: The linear position of the Polish enclitic się in the utterance is determined by the structural conditions. The paper discusses detailed syntactic ordering restrictions of the word się. The author’s research confirms the thesis that the word under examination does not appear (i) at the beginning of an utterance, (ii) immediately after the operator nie, (iii) immediately after a simple preposition, (iv) inside apposition, (v) between nouns forming a nominal phrase. Contrary to traditional opinion, the word się can appear at the end of utterance. The final position of się depends on the speaker’s pragmatic preferences.
